The high fade haircut might be starting to get a little too famous for its own good, but there’s no denying that it’s a flattering, ageless look. Colin Farrell, who showed up to the Golden Globes earlier this month sporting a fresh-from-the-barber fade, cemented that fact. The 40-year-old actor looked better than ever—and better than anyone, for that matter.
We tracked down his longtime hairstylist and groomer (i.e. the guy that trims those bushy brows), Sacha Quarles, to find out what Farrell’s secret sauce is (other than, you know, looking like Colin Farrell). Quarles also works with guys like Justin Timberlake, Shia LaBeouf, Matthew McConaughey and has been nominated for two Emmy Awards for his work in TV. In short, he knows a thing or two about hair.
“I have done every kind of style on Colin, from military buzz-cuts, to long, unruly hairstyles for his acting projects.” Quarles told us, “He is really cool with changing his look, which always helps.” Here, the Los Angeles-based hairstylist breaks down Farrell’s look:
The Cut
“His current look is a clipper cut with a tight taper—but not to the skin. I feel that skin fades have become too trendy. So we agreed that it should be tight, but not that tight. It’s a disconnected cut, which means it’s not fully graduated. It goes from short to long a bit aggressively. I like the idea of going a bit longer on top. I think we’re seeing some movement toward longer haircuts in general in Hollywood right now.
If you want this cut, show a picture to your barber so he or she can see the look to recreate it. Most stylists are visual people and they will connect more with a picture than a verbal breakdown!”
The Style
“I like to use a quarter-size amount of medium- to strong-hold gel like AG Firm Hold Jel while Colin’s hair is wet and a vent brush to smooth and control his texture. His texture is a pretty straight to start with, but I like to restructure his growth patterns with products and a hair-dryer so it looks perfect. Once his hair is dry, I’ll create a soft part with a little bit of Bumble and Bumble Sumotech using just my hands. By skipping the comb, you keep the part from looking too severe.
Don’t forget about brows and beard when styling your hair—they affect the overall look quite a bit! We do different facial hair lengths with Colin. He is a fan of facial hair; even if it’s just a couple of days of growth. I trim his eyebrows enough to keep them in shape without making them look groomed. Overly groomed brows are not attractive on men—use caution!”
